Article | Skopeofonia in the field: ways of worldmaking through music in a Cape Verdean neighbourhood in Lisbon
Ana Flávia Miguel, integrated researcher at INET-md, has just published an article in the journal Ethnomusicology Forum, entitled “Skopeofonia in the field: ways of worldmaking through music in a Cape Verdean neighbourhood in Lisbon.”This article analyses how, following Cape Verde's independence in 1975, the late 1970s and 1980s were marked by the arrival of numerous migrants to the neighbourhood of Cova da Moura (Kova M) in Lisbon. Given the community’s vibrant musical life, a multidisciplinary team carried out the INET-md project Skopeophonie between 2013 and 2015, focusing on ethnomusicological research. The project actively involved young residents of the neighbourhood as researchers, developing a participatory methodology adapted to the Portuguese context. Through shared research practices, the team focused on identifying and documenting the music and the places where it occurs within the neighbourhood.

Abstract:
Following the independence of Cape Verde in 1975, the late 1970s and 1980s were marked by the arrival of several people to the neighbourhood of Cova da Moura (Kova M), in Lisbon, Portugal. Considering the intense musical life of the neighbourhood, a multidisciplinary team focusing on ethnomusicological research conducted the Skopeofonia project in Kova M from 2013 to 2015. The Skopeofonia project integrated young Kova M residents as active researchers to develop a methodology and investigated its applicability in the Portuguese context. Using shared research practices, the research team dedicated part of its research to identifying and documenting the music and locations at which music occurs in the neighbourhood. This article describes the research practices of the Skopeofonia project, the methods of collectively creating new knowledge, and the way that these processes allowed the acknowledgement of ethnomusicology’s potential for social transformation.
