About this Group

The Dance Studies Group conducts research focusing on body and digital technologies, dance education, improvisation and social inclusion with special emphasis on the Lusophone World. The group fosters the study of dance and sound as interconnected modes of expressive behavior, in collaboration with other INET-md research groups. In addition, the group is engaged in archiving multimedia documents in partnership with contemporary dance companies and choreographers.

Objectives
  • To promote an interdisciplinary approach to theory and method in the fields of Ethnochoreology and Cultural Studies in Dance;

  • To develop epistemologies that take into account and articulate the ways in which the body makes its mark on critical theory and performance practice;

  • To study the dynamics between the local and the global, the "glocal" expressive modes, the emergence of new identities and their plural expressions, new ways of cultural exchange, encounter, and social conflicts;

  • To explore new research strategies, taking into account post-colonial studies, critical theory, cultural studies, and gender studies.

Priorities
  • Transcultural processes in dance in colonial and post-colonial contexts in the Lusophone world and its diasporas;

  • Dance and digital technologies;

  • Dance heritage and its transmition processes;

  • Archiving documents on dance and the performing arts, both in digital and physical carriers;

  • Exploring new ways of archiving the intangible cultural heritage.
