Luís Carvalho, a researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology - Center for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) and lecturer at the Department of Communication and Art (DeCA) at the University of Aveiro (UA), won third prize at the Wind Composition Contest Saxony, in Germany. The second edition of this global competition featured 92 works by 75 composers from 20 countries.

The work, entitled "This is not a Passacaglia", defies the definition by actually being a Passacaglia. The ironic title pays homage to the surrealist master René Magritte and his iconic work "Ceci n'est pas une pipe". The musical piece incorporates Magritte's creative and biting approach, exploring the convergence between traditional elements and unorthodox expression.
The Winds Composition Contest Saxony (WCCS) is an international composition competition for wind music, organized by the Dresdner Bläserphilharmonie e.V. in cooperation with the SHE LIVES association. In addition to the prizes, the selected works will be performed throughout the 2024 concerts by the Dresdner Bläserphilharmonie, highlighting the diversity of wind music. The second edition of the competition, held in 2023, continues to promote worldwide excellence and innovation in wind composition.
