Biography

Mauricio Freire Garcia, Vice-President of Planning and Development and Full Professor at the School of Music at Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), where he was director for two terms. Graduated from the same institution in 1987, he is the only flutist to receive a doctorate degree, with honors, from the New England Conservatory, USA. Since 2003 he has served as 1st. Flutist at OSESP and maintains an active career as a soloist and chamber musician. He has worked with important conductors and composers such as Kurt Mazur, Kristoff Penderecki, Eiji Owe, Sofia Gubaidulina and Thea Musgrave. He was a member of Boston MusicaViva, one of the leading contemporary music groups in the USA, and the UFMG Contemporary Music Group. In Boston he distinguished himself as a soloist with the Boston Chamber Music Society, the New England Conservatory Bach Ensemble and the Contemporary Ensemble. In 2005 he performed alongside pianist Nelson Freire at the Piano aux Jacobins Festival in Toulouse, France. He frequently participates in the faculty of some of the country's main festivals, such as Campos do Jordão, Curitiba, Pelotas and Ouro Branco and teaches masterclasses in the country and abroad. Parallel to his artistic activity, he worked on organizing the “Pão de Santo Antônio” archives in Diamantina and “Curt Lange” at UFMG and from 2000 to 2002 he was a visiting professor at "Wellesley College" and the "College of the Holy Cross", both In the USA. His research activities cover the history and pedagogy of the flute, spectral analysis, performance analysis and tinnitus. Among his recordings, which cover different styles and periods, include Bach's Suite in B minor, Bolling's Jazz Suite, Abel Ferreira's Choros and several CDs with OSESP. Among its teachers, James Galway, Paula Robison, Fenwick Smith, Expedito Vianna and Artur Andrés stand out.

 

He is currently a visiting researcher at INET-MD NOVA in Lisbon.
