Abstract
Since its emergence in 1951, the electric bass has been predominantly used in the accompanying role. To a lesser extent, there are original instrumental works by bassists who take on a leading role; however, works where the instrument is the protagonist are rarer, and in Gaúcho Instrumental Music (MIG), the focus of this work, this is still nonexistent. I perceived, in this context, room for the development of new practices capable of expanding the possibilities of the electric bass towards a soloist condition. It is from the desire to address this challenge that I propose the development of an approach that I refer to as an idiomatic approximation, which involves the exploration and adaptation of technical and expressive resources from the acoustic guitar and the electric guitar (instruments socially recognized as soloists in MIG) to the electric bass. This approach was constructed based on three aspects: 1- adaptations of an organological nature; 2- melody with accompaniment; 3- adaptation of technical and mechanical procedures of the right and left hands. This approach was explored in the development of a set of compositions and arrangements that integrate elements of jazz, Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), tango, and rhythms used in Gaúcho music (chamamé, milonga, chacarera etc.). The experimental work undertaken culminated in a set of arrangements and compositions that make up the album 'Um Lugar Seguro'.
