Abstract
This project explores the confluence of different popular music styles in a rural tourist destination during the dictatorship of Estado Novo. The musical practice and dance were metaphors for modernity and tradition, rurality and cosmopolitism, politics and transgression. I intend to study how the growing number of musicians and ensembles and the contact with the musical industry and sound technology in Vidago reflect the symbiotic relationship between tourism and music. Music was a key factor in the entertainment that hotels offered to their clients, including band orchestration, chanson française, tango, opera arias, fado, classical music, jazz and folkloric music. This case study exposes the cultural policies of Salazar’s dictatorship, such as the dominant rule of Casas do Povo, the preponderance of Emissora Nacional, the nostalgia of rurality and a “portuguesecizing” of music.
