Biography

Born in Porto, Luís Duarte has developed his musical studies at ESMAE with Fausto Neves, Luís Filipe Sá and Madalena Soveral. He has enriched his studies at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest with Laszlo Baranyay (piano) and Rita Wagner (chamber music). He has participated in various masterclasses with Josep Colom, Helena Sá e Costa, Sequeira Costa, Arbo Valdma, J. Bourgès-Maunoury, Pedro Burmester, Miguel Borges Coelho. Luis Duarte has been awarded at Lopes-Graça 2nd Piano Competition (Portugal) and the prize of Rotary Club Porto-Foz for the best student of music at ESMAE. He has performed as a soloist and as a chamber musician in Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. He has also performed with Espinho Classical Orchestra and Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto – Casa da Música under the direction of Cesário Costa, Pawel Przytocki, Alessandro Crudele and Stefan Blunier. He has recorded for Brilliant Classics Label, Portuguese National Radio (RDP Antena 2), Slovenian National Radio and Classical Planet (Euroclassical) and has premiered works of Ângela Ponte, Fernando Lopes-Graça and António Pinho Vargas.
As a freelancer pianist he collaborates frequently with Casa da Música (Porto) – with Remix Ensemble and Porto Symphony Orchestra, working with conductors and singers such as Péter Eötvös, Heinz Holliger, Paul Hillier, Emilio Pomàrico, Vassily Sinaisky, David Wilson-Johnson, Stephen Loges, Anke Vondung, Michaela Kaune. Currently, he is a piano professor at Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho and teaches Lied at Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo Porto. His debut album for Brilliant Classics - “Portuguese Music for Piano Duo” – was awarded the “Prémios Play” (best classical music album in Portugal in 2022). His recitals with Ian Bostridge and Christoph Prégardien have been highly acclaimed and future compromises for 2024 include solo recitals, as well as with the tenors Ian Bostridge and Ilker Arcayürek.
