Biography
Sandra works as a chamber musician/orchestrator and pedagogue in her home country, Colombia. She graduated from the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg (Austria) under the tutelage of the renowned violist Thomas Riebl. Expanding her chamber music training, she completed a postgraduate course in chamber music at the Pontifica Universidad Javeriana (Colombia) with Richard Young, violist of the American quartet Vermer Quartet. His chamber music activity has been developed since 2010 with Cuarteto Q-Arte, one of the most recognized quartets in Latin America (Latin Grammy 2020 and The Classical: NEXT Innovation Award, The Netherlands) dedicated to the exploration, dissemination and interpretation of Latin American academic and contemporary music. With the quartet he has participated in important festivals and concerts in Colombia, the United States, Europe and Latin America and has recorded the music of renowned Colombian and Latin American composers. As an orchestral musician, she has been invited to play with orchestras such as Salzburg Chamber Soloist, Camerata Salzburg, Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Prague Kammer Philharmonie, Koreanischen Philharmonie and Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia, among others. In the field of teaching, she has spent 11 years building schools and offering master classes in different institutions nationally and internationally. Her vocation as a manager has led her to create the Interviolas Bogotá Festival, which began in 2010, and together with the Q-Arte Quartet she founded the International String Quartet Festival FestiQ-Artetos in 2014. She is currently the violist of Cuarteto Q-Arte, member of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, professor of viola at the Conservatorio de Música of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and professor of chamber music and viola at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.Doctoral ProjectTitleBetween Skins and Woods: Expanding the idiom of the string quartet by including resources from traditional Colombian music
SupervisorsAbstractThe string quartet is linked to practices and repertoires, with certain types of techniques that have been evolving, and developing new possibilities that arise in the European tradition. However, it remains to explore the interpretation of music for this formation that has been inspired by traditional elements of countries outside European territory, as is the case of Colombia.
Beyond focusing on the study of the sounds that correspond to the Colombian musical tradition, a process will be carried out that will include aspects beyond the strictly sonorous-musical, such as: gesture, movement, context, as well as the type of relationships that individuals establish at the moment in which these types of manifestations occur.
