Biography

Maria Bernardete Castelan Póvoas, born in Criciúma, southern Brazil, is a piano professor at the State University of Santa Catarina - UDESC. She is a teacher at the Undergraduate and Graduate Music Programs, and also acts as a researcher, coordinator of outreach programs and member of academic committees. She has a PhD degree in Music from the Post-Graduate Program of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS under the guidance of Dr. Celso Loureiro Chaves, with residence at the University of Iowa (USA) with Dr. Rene Lecuona. Her Master's Degree in Piano Performance  (UFRGS) was advised by Dr. Cristina Caparelli Gerling and Dirce Knijnik. She has developed interdisciplinary research on artistic analysis, piano performance and chamber music, presenting and publishing in conferences and other events in music. Her research encompasses technique and interpretation of solo and chamber piano repertoire, related to the areas that deal with human movement, pianistic-functional strategies of training focusing on the sound result. She has performed solo and chamber recitals in different formations, premiered works and recorded CDs. Since 2010, with her Duo Castelan & Barros with pianist Luis Claudio Barros, she has premiered several works by Brazilian composers and performed in many conferences and recitals in tours in Brazil and abroad. From September 2018 to June 2019, she was a visiting post-doctoral researcher at the INET-md/University of Aveiro, under the guidance of Helena Marinhho, researching about Frederico de Freitas’ piano compositions (University of Aveiro Collection).
