Call for papers | RED Journal | Special issue on: “The diversity of theatrical dance in Portugal”
 

Revista Estud(i)os de Dança (RED) is a peer-reviewed publication edited jointly by the Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança - INET-md, FMH branch, Universidade de Lisboa Lisbon, and the Centro de Estudos em Artes Performativas - CEAP. It aims to contribute to understanding dance and its processes through scientific and systematic procedures and promote transdisciplinary debate.

A Revista Estud(i)os de Dança (RED) is now launching a thematic section dedicated to the theme: "The diversity of theatrical dance in Portugal". Theatrical dance practices in Portugal have been documented in historical publications (Sasportes, 1970, 1991; Ribeiro, 1991, 1994), in books on temporally and politically circumscribed periods (Tércio, 2005, 2010; Ribeiro, 1994), in reflections on performance studies (Lepecki, 1997, 2016), in works that situate choreographic creation in sociocultural and biographical contexts (Fazenda, 2012 [2007]), among others that record the specificity of the work of creators or creative structures, such as some of those collected in a recent publication by Teatro Municipal do Porto (História(s) da Dança, 2023).

Whether they focus on historical transformations of long or short duration, or artistic movements, aesthetics and languages, these works theoretically explicitly or tacitly recognize the diverse nature of theatrical dance in Portugal, both internally and in its relationship with other geographies, as well as taking into account the political and socio-cultural circumstances that shape it.
 
Today, the reality of theatrical dance in Portugal is expanding significantly and the diversity of proposals is increasing. The picture is made up of multicolored dots, in which we can observe the particular universes of each artist, the extensions of the classical dance domain, the articulation of various body and aesthetic techniques - from hip hop to the most diverse social dances, including other forms of expressive culture from the fields of competition -, the plurality of bodies, the inclusion of diverse groups and people in participatory projects. These cultural practices show us various world views, social and cultural realities, human experiences and ways of life. They are practices resulting from socio-cultural dynamics, which are fostered (or conditioned) by the role of institutional structures, whether public or private, local or national, by cultural policies and cultural programming, by the actions of specific people.

Following on from the above, we invite you to write texts that contribute to our knowledge of the current panorama of theatrical dance in Portugal, including practices in which the purpose, the context of occurrence and the criteria for participation that define the theatrical can intersect with those of other fields, such as the social, the ritual and the educational. The theoretical and methodological scope is broad, opening up space for proposals that can be driven by perspectives from dance studies or the social sciences, focusing on a case study, with ethnographic analysis, combined with historical research, or an autoethnographic approach.
 

 

Suggested topics:
  • Articulation of practices, hybridity and new languages: configurations and contexts;
  • Transnational flows of practices, representations, meanings and their local interpretations and reconfigurations;
  • Participatory projects: objectives, interest and value for the participating groups, communities and creative teams;
  • Diversity of bodies on stage: actions, ideas, experiences;
  • Moving dances first performed in other contexts (social, competition or others) to the theatrical space;
  • Academic institutionalization of bodily and aesthetic techniques created and developed in the social field institutional guidelines and policies integrating difference: forces and impacts on cultural programming and artistic practices.

Maria José Fazenda Martins Professor at the Escola Superior de Dança - Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa (Lisbon Polytechnic's Higher School of Dance). Ph.D. in Anthropology from ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (Lisbon University Institute). Dance Course from the Escola de Dança - Conservatório Nacional (Dance School - National Conservatoire, Portugal). Member of the CRIA (Centre for Research in Anthropology, Portugal). The research focuses is on theatrical dance understood as a universe of representations and bodily experiences through which the people involved reflect deliberately and creatively on their affective and sociocultural lives.
