Available in open access, this piece strives to study phonography in Portugal through The Gramophone Company; it examines the period between the 1900 recording sessions and the company’s first significant Portuguese catalogue, printed in December 1908. It traces the transformations undertaken in the discs and repertoires along with the rise of genre segmentation during the first decade of Portuguese commercial phonography, when a market for its products was established in the country.
