After the launch of its first volume, RED launches a thematic issue dedicated to the theme “Somatic education and embodiment in a digital world”.

Somatic education develops an intensified awareness of the body through its inner perception. To know and feel the body from the sensory experience is to experience the body intensely as a porous and pulsating space and is, simultaneously, an exercise in incorporating a slow and dilated time.

Revista Estud(i)os de Dança (RED) is a peer-reviewed publication edited jointly by the Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança - INET-md, FMH branch, Universidade de Lisboa Lisbon, and the Centro de Estudos em Artes Performativas - CEAP. It aims to contribute to the understanding of dance and its processes through scientific and systematic procedures as well as to promote transdisciplinary debate.

In a digital era, where the tyrannies of speed that Virilio (2007) denounces prevail, assuming somatic practice as an epistemological vision is, in itself, an act of resistance. Therefore, the expression “somatic education” that we propose here, understood as the orientation for the practice of the sensitive and for the stimulation of a relational and creative way of self-knowledge, appears as a form of resistance.

This thematic dossier explores the challenges faced by the field of somatic practices in light of the speed of a digital way of life and the hegemonic power of contemporary western culture. We want to question, challenge, exchange perspectives and generate dialogue about the role of somatic practices and somatic education in human experience, knowledge and thought:

  • Will there be time for somatic awareness in the future?
  • How can education be (re)thought?
  • What role can these practices play in reconciling the experiential dimension of the body in a world increasingly dominated by a normalized image?
  • What challenges do they pose to the field of academic research?
  • How do they relate to artistic processes and practices?
  • What critical perspectives can potentiate the field of somatic practices and education?

We consider this theme from a broad disciplinary perspective, and we accept articles that intersect it from the perspective of different fields of study. Therefore, this call is open to fields of study such as but not limited to artistic studies, health and well-being, philosophy and educational sciences, among others.
