(Un)Fairness in Music - and the Eurovision Song Contest

EUROVISIONS | 13 to 14-05-2026 | University of Basel, Switzerland | Online

The EUROVISIONS international conference has been held alongside the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) since 2018, offering a unique forum where fans, professionals, and researchers come together to explore the many facets of this iconic contest.

The 8th 2025 EUROVISIONS conference will take place on the 13th and the 14th of May at the University of Basel, Switzerland, under a partnership with this universitys Musicology department. Following on from what happened with previous editions, this conference is organized by the EUROVISIONS research group, whose transdisciplinary project is firmly rooted within NOVA FCSH, as one of INET-mds flagship initiatives.

This year, the conference will focus on the theme of "(Un)Fairness in Music", examining the complex dynamics of justice and injustice in the music world in a partnership with the Fairmuse International research project. From ESC selection processes and voting systems to questions of gender, cultural representation, and the economic structures of the music industry, the conference promises a deep dive into some of the most pressing issues facing music today.

Why focus on (Un)Fairness?

Fairness in music is a universal issue that resonates far beyond the ESC. At the 2025 conference, well explore topics such as:

Voting systems and biases: How do geopolitical alliances and cultural stereotypes impact voting mechanisms?

Representation and diversity: Who gets to take center stage, and who remains in the shadows?

Fairness in the music industry: What structures promote or hinder equitable conditions for artists?

EUROVISIONS research group was founded in 2018 by Sofia Vieira Lopes, an  ethnomusicologist at INET-md, in Lisbon, and IrvingWolther, author of the first PhD thesis on the ESC, the team later expanded to Carla Figueira, a UK-based expert in international  cultural relations; Isabel Campêlo, a singer, vocal  coach, and ethnomusicologist at INET- md; and  Wilfred van Dellen, a faculty member at  University College Maastricht (Netherlands).
The EUROVISIONS conference is held in a hybrid format, offering bothonsite participation and live streaming through the groups social media channels (YouTube and Facebook). This conference reflects the teams shared passion for thecontests cultural and social dimensions.
