The fourth edition of Campus Jazz, which runs from April 30 to June 6, 2024, promises an eclectic musical experience, featuring internationally renowned musicians such as Mark Guiliana, Aaron Parks, and Maria Mendes. This year, in sync with the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the University of Aveiro (UA), Campus Jazz pays tribute to UA's achievements in teaching, research, and regional cooperation. Also noteworthy is the role of INET-md members João Martins, Jorge Castro Ribeiro, and Susana Sardo, who actively contribute to the artistic direction and organization of the event.

For six weeks, Campus Jazz will be the epicenter of musical culture, with a program full of concerts, various masterclasses, workshops, jam sessions, a presentation by music schools, open classes and the “Jazz Talks” conference, and the UA International Jazz Competition, which has open calls for new ensembles until May 9. INET-md researcher Jorge Castro Ribeiro is on the competition jury as chairman. This event is an initiative of the University of Aveiro through the Center for Jazz Studies (CEJ), a structure dedicated to documentation and research on jazz, founded in 2007, which has João Martins as artistic director and Susana Sardo as curator.

About Campus Jazz program

This is an American Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated project in which, in addition to her usual quartet, the artist was accompanied on stage by Metropole Orkest for the live recording. On the same day and at the same venue, but at 3pm, Maria Mendes will give a masterclass. It will be an opportunity for learning and sharing for anyone in the field of singing (not just jazz), but it will also be open to other instrumentalists or listeners.

As well as concerts and various masterclasses, the program includes workshops, jam sessions, a presentation by music schools, open classes and the “Jazz Talks” conference, in addition to the Competition. Drummer Mark Guiliana will be the special guest interacting with the UA Jazz Orchestra in a concert in which he will perform originals of his own with arrangements by UA students. A masterclass, a workshop aimed at drummers and a Tiny Lab Talk will be other opportunities for students and professionals to interact with this big name in jazz. In addition to Guiliana and Maria Mendes, multi-award-winning composer and pianist Dave Meder, the trio Arbenz X Veras / Mehari and pianist and composer Aaron Parks are other internationally known names on the program. UA alumni Andreia Santos and Carl Minnemann, with their respective quartets, will open the two jam sessions scheduled for the festival.

The program closes on June 6th, with the last of two days of final performances by the ensembles selected in the International Jazz Competition and the award ceremony. In addition to the UA, this edition of Campus Jazz will also pass through the partner municipalities of Albergaria-a-Velha, Estarreja and Ílhavo.
