Already in its sixth edition, the EUROVISIONS International Conference 2023 will take place on 9 and 10 May in Liverpool between 08:45 am and 2:00 pm (BST). We are extremely happy that Liverpool Hope University will host the event in their Capstone Theatre at the Creative Campus, 17 Shaw St, Liverpool L6 1HP.

Under the headline “Representing oneself and the other: How Eurovision is shaping the perception of countries and cultures”, this year’s conference will focus on the United Kingdom and Liverpool hosting the ESC on behalf of Ukraine, on the role of national and cultural representation in general and how Eurovision is contributing to both promote and question stereotypes.

As in previous years, we will have the presence and participation of academics, music and television professionals, fans, and students engaging in dynamic round tables and conversations. Apart from our usual Science Slam, offering a platform for early career researchers to present their work to a bigger audience, this year we will also have a special participation of music students from both Hope University and LIPA with a number of live music performances.

Eurovisions is not a classical academic conference. We want to be most accessible for a large audience interested in the backgrounds of Eurovision and European cultural policy. To reach out to all people fascinated by Eurovision and Eurovision research, the conference will be streamed via YouTube and Facebook, with a possibility to ask questions and interact with the speakers. Moreover, the audience will have the chance to vote for their favourite research paper submitted by upcoming Eurovision scholars from all over the world and presented in short video clips on our social media channels.

EUROVISIONS 2023 is the result of a partnership between researchers from Germany, Portugal, UK and Liverpool Hope University. Following the work developed in previous editions – Lisbon, 2018; Tel Aviv, 2019; Online (Rotterdam) 2020, 2021; and Turin 2022 – the EUROVISIONS International Conference continues to be a platform for sharing and discussing academic and non-academic thinking about the ESC.
