The Chinese Bayin 八音 system is one of the oldest musical instrument classification systems in the world, organizing them according to the main material they are made of and, therefore, their tone colour: metal, stone, earth, skin, silk, wood, gourd, and bamboo. In this talk I will review some of the most common instruments of each family, their history and acoustical properties, illustrated with videos and pieces of their classical repertoire.
