Until recently, the history of theater in Portugal was based, above all, on the history of dramatic literature, favoring repertoire and respective authors. However, in the 1980s of the 20th century, there was an increasing appreciation of scenic practice as an object of the discipline of theater history. The scarcity of primary sources that allowed to establish the chronological discourse of this activity and its protagonists (actors, dancers, instrumentalists, businessmen, audiences) drove the "transfer" of the researcher's look from the library to the archive. The variety of socio-professional areas that combine in the art and craft of the show is well mirrored in the multiplicity of collections that welcome an extraordinary diversity of sources that allow not only to make the history of that of the Portuguese stages for centuries but also to establish the social place of those who occupied them.
