Multipart Singing in Europe: Historical Trajectories and Current Perspectives

Between October 4th and 6th, 2007 | Portel, Alentejo

The City Hall of Portel and the Regional Directorate of Culture in Alentejo hosted an international colloquium in Portel from October 4 to 6 (2007) that was organized in collaboration with the Instituto de Etnomusicologia (INET-MD), under the scientific coordination of Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco. Several INET-MD researchers presented papers and chaired sessions in the colloquium: Susana Sardo, Susana Moreno Fernández, Maria do Rosário Pestana and Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco.
Using a multidisciplinary perspective, the colloquium analyzed multipart singing in Alentejo and in other European contexts, focusing on: the geographical distribution of multipart singing in Europe; the historical trajectories of local traditions; the aesthetics, politics, social and musical organization of selected traditions; the relationship between music and text patrimonialization; music change; the resignification of performance practice; and the role of mediators (local collectors, rehearsal masters. etc.).
A report about this event will be published in the online Bulletin of INET-MD, nº1. A book in Portuguese and English containing expanded versions of the papers will be published in 2008.
