The artistic residency held between April 20 and 24, 2026, in Aveiro, was part of the project Sounds with the Taste of Home, coordinated by Klênio Barros within the research group Education, Music and Theatre in the Community, with funding of DGARTES. In line with EMTC’s research strands and with international approaches such as those promoted by SIMM, this residency focused on music as a situated social practice, fostering participatory artistic processes with communities of immigrant and displaced musicians living in Portugal.

Researchers from INET-md, in collaboration with artists and participants, developed a collective effort that bridges artistic creation, research, and community engagement.

Throughout the residency, methodologies of musical co-creation rooted in active listening, improvisation, and learning in a community context were prioritized, valuing cultural diversity as a driver of democratic practices and innovation. This process reinforced music as a space for encounter, intercultural dialogue, and the construction of belonging, in line with community music practices that aim to generate sustainable social impact. The participation of INET-md researchers, working alongside independent artists and technical teams, contributed to the consolidation of a shared creative environment, where different trajectories and musical identities were transformed into a common artistic expression.

Funded by the Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes), within the Music and Opera Programme (Edition and Distribution), the project now moves into its studio production phase and will culminate in the release of an album, a short film, and a publication. These outcomes reflect the commitment of INET-md and the EMTC group to artistic practices that integrate research, creation, and social responsibility, affirming community music as a relevant field of intervention for promoting cultural participation, inclusion, and intercultural dialogue in contemporary contexts.
