Abstract

Sounds with the Taste of Home is a research and artistic creation project situated within the field of community music practices and applied artistic research, focusing on the experiences of immigrant musicians and displaced musical communities in Portugal. Grounded in the understanding of music as intangible, embodied, and inherently portable heritage, the project explores its role in reconstructing senses of belonging and in the symbolic reconfiguration of the idea of “home” in contexts of mobility and displacement, through participatory and situated artistic processes.

Through collaborative co-creation methodologies — including collective improvisation, exploratory rehearsals, and shared composition — the project fosters dialogue between Western and non-Western musical traditions, valuing cultural diversity as a driver of artistic and social innovation. These processes, anchored in experimentation, orality, and music learning in community contexts, enable the emergence of new sonic languages and forms of identity expression.

The project culminates in the production and distribution of a music album, a short film documenting the creative process, and a book publication bringing together graphic scores, testimonies, and audiovisual materials. In parallel, artistic mediation formats are developed, such as lecture-performances, which promote audience development, intercultural dialogue, and active community engagement, strengthening their recognition and participation in the cultural sphere and contributing to the sustained expansion of their social and community impact.
