Biography
He studied at the Calouste Gulbenkian Conservatory of Music in Aveiro, graduated in Musical Sciences (Educational Training Branch), did his Master’s in Educational Administration, with the work published in the book ‘O Conservatório de Música: professores, organização e políticas’, and did his PhD in Education from the University of Lisbon, in the area of ‘Educational Administration and Policy, with the thesis entitled “A educação artístico-musical- cenas, atores e políticas”.
He has taught in various educational institutions from primary to higher education and in various grades and types of music teaching, was director of the Almada Professional Music School (1992-1996), worked as a specialist technician in specialised music teaching within the Ministry of Education and took part in various working groups related to the revision of the music teaching curriculum and the arts (1996-2002). He was a visiting professor at the Federal University of Bahia. He is a Coordinating Professor in the Arts Department of the School of Education of the Setúbal Polytechnic Institute, and co-coordinates the master’s programme ‘Education, Artistic Practices and Inclusion’.
In addition to teaching, he has held positions such as President of the Portuguese Association of Music Education (2011-2015), where he co-constructed the ‘Cantar Mais’ project, director of the Revista Educação Musical, created and coordinated the intervention and pedagogical-musical research project entitled ‘Outras Bandas – instrumentos de inclusão’ (Other Bands – instruments of inclusion) supported by Almada City Council (2016-2018). He has been a jury member for master’s and doctoral theses in the field of music and its teaching, an area in which, along with teacher training, he has supervised various master’s theses. In the field of research, she is an integrated member of CIPEM|INET-md and has carried out several different research projects, both collectively and individually, including the two most recent ones: ‘Investigating and Evaluating the Recriar-se Project’ (on the arts and the social inclusion of homeless people) and ‘Festival Sementes – International Arts Exhibition for small audiences’, having participated in and organised national and international congresses and seminars related to the arts, public policies, teaching and artistic practices. She has published research on music teaching and arts education; the profession of musician and the training of music teachers; music schools; creativity; public policies (educational and cultural), creativity-based learning, ecologies of creative and formative action, creative practices and artistic practices.
