Rui Chaves took up his new position at INET-md/NOVA FCSH on 14 April, under an Individual Scientific Employment Incentive Contract in the category of Assistant Researcher, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.

With a PhD in Music from Queen’s University Belfast (2013), Rui Chaves was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of São Paulo and a visiting lecturer at the Federal University of Paraíba, and has been working across sound art, experimental music, sound studies and socially engaged art.

The new researcher at INET-md will now join the Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies research group to develop, over the coming years, the project Revolutions per Minute: Finding Utopia(s) in Brazilian Sound Art, in conjunction with the thematic line Power, Politics and Activism. Through this project, the researcher aims to examine how Brazilian sound art imagines and creates ephemeral challenges to the power structures that shape everyday life in Brazil, redefining utopia as a continuous process of questioning, subversion and transformation of the status quo.
