Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco invited to coordinate Grove Music Online volume on Portugal

Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco, Professor Emerita at NOVA FCSH and President Emerita of INET-md, has been invited by Grove Music Online to coordinate a new volume dedicated to Portugal, as part of the Latin American and Iberian Music editorial initiative, aimed at expanding and updating the coverage of music from the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America in one of the leading international reference works in music and musicology.

Scheduled to begin in October, the project will involve the preparation of a collection of entries on music in Portugal and will also include contributions from several INET-md researchers, who will be invited by Grove to participate as authors. The volume will bring together and update knowledge on different musical practices, repertoires, institutions, figures and contexts in Portugal, making it available through an international reference platform.

The invitation builds on Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco’s extensive work in the research, publication and international dissemination of knowledge on music in Portugal. Among her major editorial projects is the four-volume Enciclopédia da Música em Portugal no Século XX [Encyclopedia of Music in Portugal in the Twentieth Century], which she edited and which was published by Círculo de Leitores/Temas e Debates in 2010, alongside numerous international publications on music, ethnomusicology and the Iberian Peninsula.

Founder of INET-md in 1995, which she directed until 2020, Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco has pursued an internationally recognised academic career in ethnomusicology and musicology. Her recent publications include Music and the Making of Portugal and Spain: Nationalism and Identity Politics in the Iberian Peninsula (University of Illinois Press, 2023), co-edited with Matthew Machin-Autenrieth and Samuel Llano.
