Shannon Garland

Shannon Garland is Assistant Professor in the Music Department at the University of Pittsburgh and Fulbright Scholar at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

She researches music labor, commodification, media and politics. Her work has been concentrated on indie music in Chile and Brazil, examining the economic struggles of musicians and producers amidst changing media, policy and industry environments. Her Fulbright project examines the relation between musical feeling and the labor of constructing and running the 50th anniversary of the Festa do Avante!

Dr. Garland is co-editor of Independence in 21st-Century Popular Music: Cases from Beyond Anglo-America with Pedro Belchior Nunes and Pedro Roxo. She has published in a variety of venues, including Culture, Theory and Critique; Ethnomusicology Forum; The Journal of Extreme Anthropology; Rock Music Studies; and the Oxford Handbook of Economic Ethnomusicology.

Dr. Garland holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Columbia University (New York, NY)
