Post-digital aesthetics acts as a catalyst for contemporary artistic creation, being particularly relevant in Western music through the exploration of unorthodox expressive elements and the hybridisation between the physical and digital realms as a driving force for creation. Through a case-study methodology involving a musician, a composer and technology – the latter acting as a facilitating and motivating element —this study explores how the hybridisation of these realms can serve as a strategy for developing repertoire, new sounds and the expansion of the saxophone’s timbral resources, whilst also highlighting the fundamental role of the performer in generating creative, sonic and visual material for contemporary musical creation. New and long-standing issues related to performance are reconfigured in the light of technologies currently applied to music, prompting reflection on the role of performers and their interaction with technological systems, which are sometimes endowed with non-human agency.
