Maria Espírito Santo and Maria de São José Côrte-Real, researchers at NOVA University Lisbon, co-edit the volumes My Verse, My Voice. Poems Written by Women Fado Singers and Mis Versos, Mi Voz. Poemas escritos por fadistas mujeres, two bilingual editions devoted to poetry written by women fado singers, published as part of Shantarin Editora’s POESIA Noun Feminine – Women’s Voices from the Southwest project.
Launched on 27 May, POESIA Noun Feminine is a European-scale initiative dedicated to promoting Portuguese women’s poetry internationally. The collection brings together 7 bilingual editions, 12 authors, and creates a bridge between canonical and contemporary voices, reaching new audiences and geographical horizons.
The project carries across borders major poems by Florbela Espanca, Natália Correia and Ana Luísa Amaral, alongside the contemporary vitality of Margarida Vale de Gato and Tatiana Faia. The collection is also distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach in two collective volumes: in one, poetry enters into dialogue with the visual universe of artists such as Paula Rego; in the other, poetry merges with the musicality of fado through a lineage of six singer-authors, from Amália Rodrigues to Teresinha Landeiro, including Aldina Duarte, Mafalda Arnauth, Cuca Roseta and Carminho.
With Spanish translation by María Matta, English translation by Andrzej Stuart-Thompson, and illustrations by Tamara Alves, My Verse, My Voice and Mis Versos, Mi Voz contribute to the international circulation of Portuguese poetry by women, while highlighting the literary dimension of fado and the role of women in contemporary poetic and musical creation.
The launch of the POESIA Noun Feminine collection took place on 31 May at Feira do Livro de Lisboa.
