Musical creativities in music education research: Critical perspectives in dialogue
Viviane Beineke | Santa Catarina State University, Brazil
This seminar addresses the theoretical, methodological, and epistemological challenges involved in research on creativity and creative practices in music education. It takes as its starting point a research group whose work centres on creative music learning and music-making practices with children.
The seminar discusses the development of research that approaches musical creativities from critical and culturally situated perspectives, as well as the expansion of this field within the research group through dialogue with doctoral studies that develop new concepts, approaches, and proposals in diverse educational contexts. These include problem-posing creative-musical action, creative-decolonial music education in Afro-diasporic cultures, popular musical cultures in music education, intercultural dialogues, and research on migrant childhoods.
Grounded in creative music projects informed by creative learning, which provides the theoretical and methodological framework for this research, these studies develop approaches across different educational contexts and broaden the questions surrounding creative learning in music education.
Throughout this process, the research field has also expanded through critical reflection on ways of producing knowledge, engaging with decoloniality, Paulo Freire’s thought, critical interculturality, Black thought, Afro-diasporic cultures, and education for ethnic-racial relations. These dialogues contribute to the development of theoretical and methodological frameworks for a critical and reflective approach to music education.
