In Paris, from 13 September to 31 October 2025, the EXIMUS project will present a documentary exhibition in French about the musical activity of various Portuguese singers and musicians exiled in France during the Estado Novo dictatorship (1933- 1974), particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, at the crossroads of various international influences.
On 13 September, with Manuel Deniz Silva, coordinator of the EXIMUS project, in attendance, the exhibition’s vernissage, organised in partnership with Maison du Portugal – André de Gouveia and the association Mémoire vive-Memória viva, will include a screening of the film O Salto (Christian de Chalonge, 1967), with original music by Luís Cília.
On 20 September, the concert-meeting ‘La géneration d’avril’, organised in parallel with the exhibition with the support of Maison du Portugal, will welcome singers Francisco Fanhais and Manuel Freire, accompanied by musician Rogério Cardoso Pires and Hugo Castro and Ricardo Andrade, researchers at INET-md.
On 5 October, a debate will be held, with film screenings, to discuss ‘Music in films about Portuguese immigration in the 1960s and 1970s’.
On October 9, Manuel Deniz Silva will offer a lecture entitled “The Journey of a Musician in Exile in Paris in the 1930s: Fernando Lopes-Graça,” hosted by the FMSH Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, as part of the Rencontres de la Bibliothèque Gulbenkian.
On December 6, on the occasion of the “Tour du monde des langues: mondes lusophones“, the exhibition will be on display at the Maison pour tous Mahsa Amini, in Aubervilliers, outskirts of Paris, where the researcher Agnès Pellerin will lead guided tours. The “Tours du Monde et des Cultures” are an initiative of Maison des Langues et des Cultures d’Aubervilliers, an organisation dedicated to the pedagogy for learning and transmitting languages, which seeks to promote the richness of the linguistic and cultural diversity of the city, as well as the linguistic skills of its residents.
