Biography

In 2025, Leon earned a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with the dissertation Django’s Heritage – Ethnomusicological and Acoustic Perspectives on the Manouche Guitar. This interdisciplinary research combined ethnomusicological analysis with acoustic studies to explore the material, sonic, and cultural dimensions of the Manouche guitar.

Leon’s academic background also includes a Master’s degree in Musical Arts (2017) from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a Postgraduate Diploma in Acoustics and Sound Studies (2018) from the same institution. Earlier in his academic trajectory, he earned a degree in Nouvelles Technologies du Son from the Université de Toulon, France (2014) and a degree in Art Education and Music from Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Brazil (2005).

Leon’s research trajectory has evolved in close dialogue with artistic practice, particularly in the fields of composition and performance. He has composed over 30 original soundtracks for theatre, dance, film, and performance projects, and has participated in various musical ensembles.
