José Miguel Nicolau Pinto
Biography
José Nicolau Pinto holds a PhD in Musicology from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at NOVA University Lisbon. His research focuses on the relationships between music and audiovisual media, and his doctoral work examined music in the films of director João César Monteiro. His research interests include musical mediation through audiovisuals, the relationship between music and cinema, and the different modes of listening that these interactions enable. In this field, he has authored several academic works, most of them connected to his doctoral research. Notable among these are a study on “operatic stagings” in Monteiro’s films, published in 2026 in The Opera Quarterly, and a study on the relationship between music and humor in the same director’s work, published in 2026 in Diacrítica. In addition, he has participated in several national and international conferences and is currently involved, as a postdoctoral fellow, in the project “Miniaturized Opera: The Social Experience of Intersubjectivity in Opera Streaming” (2024.16128.PEX), funded by national funds through FCT/MECI (PIDDAC) and coordinated by Vinícius de Aguiar.
