Jorge Castro Ribeiro
Doutorado em Música (Etnomusicologia) pela Universidade de PhD in Music (Ethnomusicology) by the University of Aveiro (UA) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Art at the UA, a musicologist specializing in ethnomusicology, and a full member of the INET-md. His ethnomusicological research, grounded in a multidisciplinary approach, focuses on (a) the circulation of music, musicians, and musical instruments within the Lusophone worlds of Europe, Africa, and the Americas; (b) music as intangible cultural heritage; and (c) music in the history of society and culture in Portugal. His research interests also include Cape Verdean music, migration, postcolonial studies, jazz, music education, among others. He has conducted ethnomusicological fieldwork in Portugal, Cape Verde, Brazil, Ghana, Angola and Guinea-Bissau.
Jorge has served as the principal investigator on two competitively funded projects (FCT and INET-md) – “Atlântico Sensível” and “Vidas Musicais da Cihumba” – in addition to seven other funded projects, and has participated in teams for fourteen additional projects. He has published academic work at both national and international levels, including books, book chapters, articles, essays, and ethnographic recordings, and has presented academic papers in Portugal, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Ghana, and South Africa.
As part of his knowledge transfer to civil society, in addition to conferences and lectures, he regularly participates in public concerts with commentary, where he explains and mediates musical performances for the audience. These concerts are directed toward families, the general public, and school groups. He has collaborated with distinguished artists, conductors, orchestras, and other Portuguese musical institutions.
