João Silva
Biography
João Silva works on popular entertainment and its relationship with. modernity, nationalism, historiography, technology, and everyday life. He is the editor of the Journal of World Popular Music, and his work features in many books and journals. In 2016, Oxford University Press published his monograph, Entertaining Lisbon: Music, Theatre, and Modern Life in the Late 19th Century. Silva works with institutions such as Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and Casa da Música, writing
programme notes and advertising materials, delivering pre-concert talks, teaching in music appreciation modules, and developing teaching materials for Orelhudo. He teaches at Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho and Escola de Música Óscar da Silva. Silva is a member of the artistic board of the Festival Internacional de Música de Espinho (FIME) and of the Scientific Board of the National Music Museum (Mafra).
