Helena Vasques de Carvalho

Biography

Helena Vasques de Carvalho holds a PhD in Sociology of Culture (2016) from ISCTE-IUL, Portugal, and a Master degree in piano performance from the University of Tennessee, USA. Her primary research field relates to artists’ professions in the market economy, artists’ vocational and professional development, the performing arts in the creative agenda, and others. She is currently a researcher at INET-md, NOVA University Lisbon, where she also teaches a PhD seminar on Creative Industries. Previous positions include Coordinating the Master degree program in music education at ISEIT — Almada and being an invited lecturer at Universidade de Évora.

Helena VC is the President of the Portuguese Coalition for Cultural Diversity, a member of IFCDC – International Federation of Cultural Diversity Coalitions; an invited observer by UNESCO at the intergovernmental meetings on the 2005 Convention; an international expert on creative culture/performing arts; international academic reviewer at IAFOR; invited jury for DGArtes – Culture Ministry, and Fulbright grants. As a professional freelance pianist, she performed in many concerts, recitals, chamber music, and orchestra concerts as an orchestra pianist at the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra. She is also the ABRSM representative in Portugal – Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, and a project leader in various cultural projects.
