In this chapter, the authors explore the potential of sound-based artistic practices to promote environmental awareness and a sense of community in coastal contexts. Their discussion draws on the workshop ‘Sons em Deriva: Laboratory of Listening and Sound Creation’, held as part of the ‘SHORES’ project, funded by the Creative Europe programme. The analysis focuses on the processes developed with two groups of families and children, their interactions with the soundscapes of the Ria de Aveiro, and the collective creation of an ‘imaginary sound map’.
Drawing on this experience, the authors discuss the transformative potential of sound-based creative practices to foster greater ecological awareness and new ways of relating to others and to the world.
