Abstract

This project aims to understand the production and dissemination of popular music in Portugal from the field notion proposed by Pierre Bourdieu. I discuss popular music not so much as a category or genre but as a possible subfield of cultural production in the fields of music and culture through knowledge of the agents and the values and ideologies in dispute that make up this space. My approach is focused on different periods of production and dissemination of popular music including the first half of the 1970s, when their production and dissemination is framed within a context of political-ideological dispute between dominant and strong ideologies; the 1980-85 period marked by structural changes in the recording industry and the media and affirmation of new competing discourses on the aesthetic and cultural value of popular music; and the current context marked by new channels and production platforms and access to music and its effects on the (re) structuring of this subfield.
