Towards Decolonial Music Education in the 21st Century

This lecture aims to introduce and discuss the concepts of coloniality and decoloniality, reflecting on their impact on music education processes developed within formal educational institutions. The discussion will focus primarily on the Latin American context, while engaging in dialogue with experiences and challenges found in other contexts around the globe.
Based on this discussion, the lecture will present decolonial alternatives and approaches for thinking about, designing, and implementing music curricula and educational practices capable of responding to the demands and challenges of the contemporary world. The analyses and reflections presented draw on research conducted in Brazil over the past decade, in dialogue with studies, experiences, and scholarly work developed in different cultural contexts today.
Luís Ricardo Queiroz is a guitarist, ethnomusicologist, and music educator. He holds a PhD in Music from the Federal University of Bahia (2005) and a Master’s degree in Music from the Brazilian Conservatory of Music (2000), in Rio de Janeiro. He also completed postdoctoral research at the University of Texas at Austin, United States.
He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Music Education and in the Graduate Program in Music at the Federal University of Paraíba. Throughout his career, he has given concerts, lectures, round-table discussions, and courses in all Brazilian states and in several countries, including Peru, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, the United States, Canada, England, Portugal, Mozambique, Sweden, Finland, and Norway.
He served as President of the Brazilian Association of Music Education from 2013 to 2017 and as President of the National Association for Research and Graduate Studies in Music from 2022 to 2025.
