Sound archive as space of access
Damian Payo | Universidade Católica de Salta
This seminar outlines the work carried out on Rodolfo Kusch’s sound archive, comprising field recordings made in the Andean highlands between 1970 and 1979. The material includes stories, ritual practices and musical expressions that constitute a document of great cultural heritage value. The seminar will outline the tasks of assessment, preventive conservation and digitisation of magnetic media, and offer a reflection on the possibilities for accessing and organising the material based on its audio content, moving beyond its traditional documentary description. The seminar proposes considering the archive not merely as a collection of documents to be preserved, but as a space to be explored through listening, where technical, archival and conceptual decisions shape specific ways of accessing the material.
Damian Payo | Holds a degree in Music and Technology and is a lecturer at the Catholic University of Salta (Argentina), undertakes research projects that combine the fields of acoustics and musical anthropology with artistic creation. His work considers space as a central element, from its acoustic response to its historical use in relation to the soundscape that inhabits it. He has carried out various post-production projects for music videos and albums in Argentina and, since 2017, has been working as a director and producer on sound installations, audiovisual works and immersive sound design.
