Agapito de Miranda, documentalist and creator of memories. The auto-ethnographic notebooks of a collector of songs from Goa in the 20th century
This thesis investigates the unpublished personal songbooks of the Goan song collector Carmo Gonzaga Miguel Agapito de Miranda (1911–1995) through an integrated ethnographic and archival analysis that treats these manuscripts as both musical documentation and situated cultural practice in postcolonial Goa. Drawing on postcolonial media memory studies, the research situates Agapito de Miranda’s work within local intellectual histories of music and contributes to a historiography of Goan musical practices. The study mobilises the concepts of multidirectional memory and concurrent narratives to examine the fragmented public sphere of Goa’s multilingual society. By attending to the ethnographic and symbolic significance of the recorded repertoire, the thesis advances an understanding of memory politics and musical transmission in a postcolonial context.
