Concert | Parahybana

Josélia Ramalho | Carol Benigno | Felipe Bastos

The Parahybana concert, featuring Brazilian pianist and cellist Josélia Ramalho, showcases her own compositions alongside works by composers born in Paraíba, a small state in northeastern Brazil. Her album is currently in post-production and is scheduled for release in July 2026. Her compositions, mostly instrumental, evoke rhythms such as baião and maracatu, blending regional tradition with contemporary elements. One of the pieces, “5 de Agosto,” pays homage to the founding day of the city of João Pessoa through a pulsating 5/4 time signature, punctuated here and there by samba interludes in duple meter. The instrumental works Antonina, Valsa para Mariana, and O Vinho e o Sonho, meanwhile, traverse different landscapes of Brazilian instrumental music.

For this concert in Portugal, Josélia Ramalho has invited Carol Benigno (accordion) and Felipe Bastos (drums) to join her in a show that celebrates the richness of Brazilian music, featuring a repertoire by composers such as Sivuca, Glorinha Gadelha, and Cátia de França; artists from the new generation, such as Helinho Medeiros; and legendary figures like José Siqueira. The program also includes pieces linked to the world of forró, with references to Jackson do Pandeiro and Zé do Norte. It explores different landscapes of Brazilian instrumental music.
