By Doutor José Alberto Salgado, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Biographical note: José Alberto Salgado e Silva has been working with ethnomusicology and music education since completing his master’s degree in 2000, after a career as an instrumentalist, arranger and composer. Between 2001 and 2005, his doctoral research examined the theme of professionalization, through ethnography with university music students in Rio de Janeiro.

Interconnected topics of technique, ethics, aesthetics and economics – in learning, teaching and practicing the profession – continue to be investigated in the courses he teaches, in the supervision of research and in the texts he produces.

He is a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) and, since April 2015, he has worked at the University of Aveiro as a visiting professor and collaborating researcher at INET-md.
