Led by Sonia Shirsat, the conference will focus on the discussion of the resurgence of fado in Goa based on different institutional initiatives, but above all on Sonia Shirsat’s role in creating opportunities for teaching and learning fado in Goa and in training the many fado singers who today make Goa the fado capital of India. The event is open to the public and is being held as part of the Cycle of Conferences in Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies (CEEMP).

About Sonia Shirsat

Sonia Shirsat is a fado singer from Goa, India, whose career began in 2002. In addition to an important international career, Sonia Shirsat is the resident fado singer at Casa de Fado e Mando Madragoa, founded in Panjim – Goa’s capital – in 2019, and responsible for creating the Fado de Goa brand, which since 2017 has been protected as an Indian musical genre by Spic Macay (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture among Young People).
