Summary
In this seminar we will seek an approximation between the fields of composition and ethnomusicology with a focus on the impact of anthropological issues in the field of music making. We will examine the concepts of transculturalism and transcultural composition. We will discuss critically sensitive themes (exoticism, primitivism, nationalism, appropriation, borrowing) and conceptual domains such as intertextuality, identity, and musical signification, especially in classical music. In addition to readings and discussions, there will be commented appreciation of works and students will be able to compose or write articles write articles that involve these themes.
