Strategic Project
2025-2029
The Institute for Ethnomusicology – Centre of Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) aims to consolidate the work being developed in the past three decades, investing in emerging lines of research to address new transdisciplinary research challenges, which, in addition to the academic community, involve national and international institutions and communities, artists and policymakers.
The depth of objectives of INET-md emerges from the integration of arts, humanities and sciences in the agendas of all its Research Groups and Thematic Lines, which are at the core of the Activity Plan for 2025-2029.
The groups encompass a wide range of approaches:
- Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies;
- Historical and Cultural Studies in Music;
- Dance Studies;
- Creation, Performance and Artistic Research;
- Music Acoustics and Sound Studies;
- Education, Music and Theatre in the Community.
The interdisciplinary profile of these groups will now be emphasized by the Thematic Lines, recently created to articulate synergies in strategic areas, namely:
- Heritage(s), Archives and Museums;
- Studies on Women, Gender and Sexuality;
- Power, Politics and Activism; and
- Digital and Technological Performativities.
The new Activity Plan also attests to INET-md’s commitment to stabilizing the professional situation of its research team, while creating opportunities for early-career researchers and PhD students. Thus, conditions will also be created for the development of research themes that stand as significant contributions of the RU, including:
- Historical studies of practices and heritage in music and dance;
- The study of these as embodied social practices;
- Decolonial perspectives on dance and music in their worldwide interconnections;
- Experimental approaches in artistic research and sound studies; and
- The study of formal and non-formal practices and theories of teaching and learning in these subjects.
INET-md will thus contribute to several Sustainable Development Goals and the four thematic indicators of UNESCO Agenda. It will also continue to promote open access and collaborative and transdisciplinary research practices, reaffirming principles of social responsibility in terms of equity and diversity in knowledge production about music and dance.
INET-md will also focus on expanding its international networks, contributing to the dissemination of publications and other research results. This dissemination will be promoted through the organization of artistic and academic events, both nationally and internationally; through online and digital communication resources; collaborative curation; editorial work at regular open-access publications; the open access to research data; and the participation of citizens, artists, and communities in research.
