Alberto Hortigüela, researcher at INET-md and PhD candidate at the Department of Communication and Art, University of Aveiro, and Sara Carvalho, researcher at INET-md, are the authors of the article “‘CHESS STUDIES’ FOR STRING QUARTET: Composition based on chess”, published in open access in Revista Vortéx, v.13 (2025)

The article explores the adaptation of mathematical elements from chess in musical composition, through Chess Studies for String Quartet (2020). The work is structured according to sequences of checkmate moves on an 8×8 magic square, generating symmetries of pitch and temporality. These symmetries reflect the concept of chirality, present in both the sonic and temporal space of the piece.
