INET-md offers courses on Women Composers for undergrads at NOVA FCSH
In the first semester of 2025/2026, INET-md will offer a new course open to all undergraduate programmes at NOVA FCSH: Women Composers. The course takes a critical approach to the history of musical composition, focusing on the contribution of women — including Portuguese composers — from the Middle Ages to the present day. Topics to be explored include canon formation, intersectionality, mechanisms of invisibility, and the historical and social contexts in which these composers lived and worked. Taught by Inês Thomas Almeida, co-coordinator of the thematic line in Studies on Women, Gender and Sexuality, the course will run in a hybrid format — in person with live video streaming — on Tuesday and Thursday, from 10 AM to 12 PM. No prior musical knowledge required. Taught in English.
Starts on 16 September.
