Call for abstracts | Digital and Technological Performativities International Colloquium

As part of the activities developed by INET-md (Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance/Portugal), the thematic line Digital and Technological Performativitiehttps://www.inetmd.pt/en/thematic-lines/digital-and-technological-performativities/s aims to prospectively explore intersections between artistic creation, digital and technological innovation, and performative practices in different educational, social and cultural contexts. With a critical and interdisciplinary approach, this thematic line emerges from the collaboration of researchers from diverse backgrounds in Music and Dance, seeking to critically reflect on the growing role of technology in shaping identities, realities, and meanings in contemporary societies. It also intends to foster artistic practices, educational projects, and research initiatives that highlight the transformative impact of technological and digital tools in expanding creative boundaries and challenging conventional and institutionalized forms of artistic production and educational processes.

In this context, INET-md and the University of Aveiro will host the International Colloquium Digital and Technological Performativities, taking place on 5 and 6 of November 2025. Submissions from all areas of Music and Dance related to the scope of this thematic line are strongly encouraged

Associated topics include – but are not limited to:

1. Technology-mediated artistic and performative practices.

2. Digital tools and the creation of new cultural identities.

3. Technological-enhanced learning in educational and community contexts

4. The role of technology and digital media in fostering democracy, inclusion and participation

5. Post-digital perspectives in education, performance studies and artistic creation.

6. Popular music industries and new media technologies.

7. Ethnographic studies and research on musical practices based on new technologies.

8. New musical interfaces and hybrid musical instruments.

9. Performativity and agency in technological mediated artistic contexts.

10. Impact of emerging technologies in dance, music, and multimedia.

11.Artificial intelligence and algorithmic processes in artistic creation and performance.

Authors should send abstract proposals in English, in Word format, containing a maximum of 500 words, to INET-performatividades@ua.pt by September 30th, 2025.

Presentation formats include:

  • Paper (up to 20 min. + 10 min. discussion)
  • Lecture-Performance/installation (up to 45 min. + 10 min. discussion)
  • Performance/Installation (up to 30 min. + 10 min. discussion)
  • Panel (up to 90 min.)
  • Workshop (up to 90 min).

Important

Authors of selected proposals are responsible for providing/bringing the necessary material for the presentation. However, authors should send a list containing the associated technical requirements, and the colloquium organization will indicate the material already available at the institution to be used in each case.

Proposals accepted at the colloquium will be published in an e-book of abstracts. In addition, selected authors will be invited to submit their proposals in e-book chapter format to be included in the peer-reviewed publication Digital and Technological Performativities, edited by Alfonso Benetti, Ana Luísa Veloso, and Filipe Lopes.

Registration

Participation in the colloquium is free, but registration is mandatory. Further information about registration will be sent with the notification of acceptance of proposals.
