Abstract:

The present study has the main objective of inventorying, analyzing and archiving the musical collection, preserved in the archive of the Biblioteca Municipal Florbela Espanca, in Matosinhos. In the aforementioned collection there are several printed and handwritten scores, correspondence and other documents that reveal the richness and complexity of the life and work of a group of musicians linked to the municipality of Matosinhos, of which the pianist and composer Óscar da Silva (1870-1958) and cellist Guilhermina Suggia (1885-1950) stand out.

This research will focus primarily on the inventorying, cataloging and critical analysis of this collection, aiming to understand its contribution to Portuguese music at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, its role in the development and dissemination of the modernist musical language in Portugal and its influence on the evolution of vocal and instrumental music in Portuguese-speaking territories. The research also aims to contribute to the appreciation and preservation of Portuguese musical heritage, providing new data for future researchers and promoting its contextualization in the Portuguese musical panorama.
