OVERVIEW IN PARAMETRIC LOUDSPEAKER ARRAY TECHNOLOGY AND ITS APPLICATIONS IN SPACIALISATION IN ELECTRONIC MUSIC

Jaime Reis (INET-md)

March 15, 2018 | 14:00 | Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Tower B, Room 413

The discovery of the parametric acoustic array has come a long way since it was theoretically analyzed in the 60s. Since then, many applications were proposed in diverse contexts including military, tomography and artistic installations. This technology allows perfect sound directionally, and can be used as an expressive technique in electroacoustic music, allowing a very peculiar sound spatialisation. For such reason, it’s here treated as a idiosyncrasy, worth discussing on its own terms. During this seminar, we will present the theoretical framework of the parametric acoustic array, and then illustrate some audio applications through Jaime Reis’ music compositions, including “A Anamnese das Constantes Ocultas”, commissioned by Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa, as well as “Jeux de l’Espace”.
