Entirely dedicated to works by women composers from various countries around the world, including Portugal, CRIVO – Women Composers Festival will take place in Lisbon from September 18 to October 2, celebrating music composed by women from the Middle Ages to the present.

Curated by Inês Thomas Almeida, integrated researcher at INET-md, and part of this research unit’s thematic line Studies on Women, Gender and Sexuality, CRIVO features four concerts and various activities, which aim to offer a more nuanced and informed view of the importance and legacy of women in the History of Music.

The program includes four lecture-concerts featuring works by 30 composers; the conference “Women Composers: Processes of Exclusion and Resistance” by Rui Vieira Nery (INET-md); an Education Forum, which will be a conversation about the place of women composers in music education curricula; and the Portuguese premiere of the film “Fanny: The Other Mendelssohn” (2023), with director Sheila Hayman (who is also the great-great-grandniece of the composer) in attendance.

Events will take place at Carpintarias de São Lázaro, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, National Museum of Natural History and Science, NOVA FCSH, and the Goethe-Institut.

This festival showcases unique works from music history created over the centuries by women from countries such as Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, and the United States, among many others. Honoring the work of composers ranging from Kassia of Constantinople to Ângela da Ponte and Andreia Pinto Correia, from Eleonora d’Este to Wilhelmine of Prussia, Kaija Saariaho, and many more, CRIVO offers audiences a richer and more complete version of music history.
