The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) has awarded one of its R&D@USA fellowships for the second semester of 2025 to Pedro Mendes, one of INET-md’s researchers, currently pursuing a PhD at NOVA FCSH. This fellowship program aims to support research placements in the United States in innovative scientific or technological fields, while also strengthening academic collaboration between Portuguese and North American institutions, expanding the transatlantic network of knowledge and scientific exchange.

Within the scope of this fellowship, the INET-md researcher will carry out a research stay at Duke University, where he will develop a project mapping the activity of popular music ensembles in Lourenço Marques (present-day Maputo, Mozambique) during the late colonial period, combining ethnomusicological research with digital humanities methodologies.

The project will be supervised by Professor Louise Meintjes, a specialist in Music and Cultural Anthropology, and carried out in close collaboration with Duke University’s Digital Humanities program. By integrating ethnomusicology, history, and digital cartography, Pedro’s research seeks to shed new light on the cultural dynamics of popular music in colonial Mozambique and contribute to broader debates on music, memory, and colonial history.
